Seed Collections

The basis of successful long-term storage of seeds are well-established procedures for the collection of seeds, their cleaning and drying and finally the cold-storage to ensure the highest quality and maximum storage-life. The ˈENSCONET-Criteria for Collectionˈ have been applied for sampling WEL-species.


Within the founding framework 'Modell- und Demonstrationsvorhaben' (MuD) 'Genbank WEL' a mapping and management portal has been developed. Based on manual and automatically generated map locating, sample locations and their corresponding geo-spatial data, (e.g. their natural/ecological or administration units) can be recorded.  The varying natural habitats enable conclusions to be drawn with regard to geological factors, such as climate, water supply and soil. As these factors can have an influence upon species and their structure, a further objective of the WEL Gene Bank is to collect from as many natural habitats as possible.

Registered collectors involved in the WEL-Network can obtain access to the homepage of the Botanic Mapping-Portal by means of a protected password. The Mapping-Portal has three essential functions:

  • Registration of a sample/collection area
  • Visualisation of the data base
  • Automatic production of a label, including a barcode, for the characterisation of the seed sample
